CNYC’s 31st ANNUAL HOUSING CONFERENCE
Sunday, November 13, 2011

CNYC’s Annual Conference is the premier education event for New York cooperatives and condominiums, offering a wide diversity of learning opportunities.

Every year in early November, board members find answers to their questions, information about goods and services, advice on projects they are considering, and, perhaps best of all, a chance to talk about their problems and triumphs, and to hear about those of other Board members.

At CNYC’s 31st annual Housing Conference on Sunday, November 13, 2011, many classics are offered and an array of new sessions will enable repeat participants to explore new issues. The Conference brochure and the Online List of Classes shows that new board members can find courses in all of the basics – whether financial or legal or those relating to the physical plant of the building. More experienced board members can explore specific issues of interest – whether it is legislative issues, ‘green’ topics, curbing smoking, evaluating board performance or streamlining the payment collection.

UHAB EXPERTS PRESENT CLASSES
A special series of workshops has been developed to target the needs of members of UHAB, the Urban Homesteading Assistance Board, creator and trainer of tens of thousands of units of affordable housing throughout the city. These classes also welcome the participation of board members from other cooperative who would also like to explore Governance Challenges with Ann Henderson or to discuss with UHAB Executive Director Andrew Reicher How Can We Keep HDFC Housing Affordable?

EDUCATION CREDIT FOR PROFESSIONALS
The Conference roster includes a class designed specifically for attorneys new to the field of condominium law; this class was granted CLE credit in the past; an application has been submitted to extend this CLE eligibility. This is also the case for Marc Luxemburg’s annual class on Significant Legal Decisions of year, and applications have been submitted for three additional classes to qualify for CLE. Accounting professionals can receive credit in several classes at the Conference and some architects have also succeeded in obtaining professional credit for classes taken at the Housing Conference.

NEWMAN VERTICAL CAMPUS AT BARUCH COLLEGE
The Conference is at Baruch College on the 14th and 9th floors of the Newman Vertical Campus located at 55 Lexington Avenue on the corner of East 24th Street, beginning at 8 AM .

In the course of this information-packed day, each registrant can attend three, or even four classes (if they select two very short morning sessions) and visit the tables with their displays of Products and Services in the Exhibit Hall, which remains open from 8 AM to 3 PM.

Plan to arrive at the Conference well before your first workshop, to be sure to get your registration materials and to find your classrooms before the session starts. Enter the Newman Vertical Campus at 24th Street. Security will have your name on the list of registrants; bring your photo ID to facilitate entry. Proceed to the 14th floor. Coats can be checked as you get off the elevators.

If you are pre-registered and have received your name badge, floor plans of the classrooms and workshop tickets, you can grab your Conference packet and badge holder from the CNYC staff members at the desk opposite the elevators. Late registrants should proceed instead to CNYC HEADQUARTERS in Room 14-280 (just beyond the Coat Check) to register and receive their Conference materials. Note that it is more costly to register at the door than to register in advance, and that many workshops may be filled to capacity and therefore no longer available on the day of the Conference.

The Conference Program contains diagrams of the 14th and 9th floors showing classroom locations, a list of workshops and their classrooms, speaker biographies and a Directory of Products and Services which will a useful reference source all year long. Large signs are posted above classroom doorways and at corridors to classrooms indicating classroom numbers.

ALLOW TIME FOR THE EXHIBITS
Proceed down the corridor towards Room 14-220, which houses the Exhibit Hall. In front of the Hall, complementary coffee and tea are available throughout the day, and snacks and box lunches can be purchased.

Cabot Creamery in Vermont is a cooperative. To support fellow cooperatives, Cabot distributes its delicious cheeses in the Exhibit Hall. New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Sanitation’s Recycling Division also come to this event to provide answers to questions (and recycling decals to take back to your building). And the City Council also has a table. Dozens of additional exhibitors offer a wide variety of products, services, and good information. This is an excellent opportunity to see and touch new products, to ask questions.

Some Conference participants arrive early in the morning to visit the exhibits before going into their first workshop. Others schedule a long break in the middle of the day to be sure of enough time to exhibit-hop. Those determined to attend as many workshops as they can, must race through the exhibits during the lunch break.

If you register for Conference workshops, your name badge will admit you to the exhibit area at no additional cost. If you have friends or colleagues, who want simply to visit the Exhibits, please cut out the complimentary ticket on the cover of this Newsletter which will admit one person to the exhibit area. Additional Exhibit Area tickets can be purchased for $5. They are valid from 8 AM until 3 PM. They do NOT enable the bearer to attend any workshops.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR EACH WORKSHOP
Each cooperative and condominium that is a current member of the Council of New York Cooperatives & Condominiums can send one pre-registered representative to this Conference at no cost. Cooperatives and condominiums that were represented and voting at CNYC’s Annual Meeting in March received a coupon that can be exchanged for an additional free registration. These free registrations must be received in the CNYC office, by November 4, 2010; they must include all workshop selections. THERE ARE NO FREE REGISTRATIONS AVAILABLE ON THE DAY OF THE CONFERENCE. CNYC members are encouraged to attend as a team, in order to cover all the sessions that are of interest. Modest rates apply to additional member registrants and to Professional Subscribers. The public is welcome, too, but at much higher rates.

The Conference brochure contains a registration form for you to complete with your specific workshop selections, or you may register and pay online. One all-day fee admits regular Conference registrants to all activities. This fee varies according to the status of the registrant. Individuals attending only one workshop pay half of the full fee applicable to them depending on their membership status and the timing of their registration.

Tickets will be sent to registrant in the week prior to the Conference. Tickets will be held at the door for any registration received in the CNYC office after November 8th. Meticulous records ensure that passes can be written for anyone whose tickets are lost in the mail or forgotten at home,

COLOR CODED TICKETS
Conference workshops are conducted in classrooms on the 14th and the 9th floors of the Newman Vertical Campus.

Tickets in shades of blue, purple and green are for classes on the 14th floor and those in shades of pink, orange and yellow are for classes on the 9th floor. Each ticket has the name of the workshop, the floor and room where it is located and the time frame for its presentation.

Registrants are asked to write their names, addresses and e-mail contact on these tickets and to present them in their classrooms where they will be collected.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES
Complementary coffee and tea are available throughout the day outside the Exhibit Hall where snacks and box lunches can be purchased. At the end of the day, refreshments will be served at the Reception, which is held in the Exhibit Hall

RECEPTION
At the end of the day, all participants are invited to gather in the Exhibit Hall for refreshments. There, CNYC leaders and guest celebrities will review some of the year’s successes for cooperatives and condominiums.

Winners of the door prizes offered by the vendors will be drawn at this Reception. Awards will go only to those who are present.

We look forward to seeing you at the 31st Annual Housing Conference.
