GLOBAL CLIMATE ISSUES CONCERN EVERYONE

Our nation is beginning to reexamine wasteful energy practices as evidence mounts of the detrimental effects of global climate change. We acknowledge the need to conserve our energy resources and to seek alternative renewable energy sources. But energy policy changes in cooperatives and condominiums can be challenging.

The Board can evaluate building operations, fine tune and monitor the heating system, use the most environment friendly fuels, and install state-of-the-art lighting in public spaces, The Board can plan for energy conscious upgrades of the roof, the windows, and systems to better control electric use.

But to be effective, the Board must also find ways to engage all building residents. Profligate use of energy must be eliminated, until every shareholder cringes at the mere thought of a light left on in a room that is unoccupied.

The task is daunting. But help is available. The Apartment House Institute of CUNY Technical College provides energy conservation information and skill training to building owners, managers, superintendents and staff. On Wednesday, August 1st, the Apartment House Institute and Baruch College join CNYC in sponsoring an intensive workshop on ways to prepare New York City apartment buildings to cope with global climate change. This presentation will be of interest to board members, to property managers and to building staff. Space is limited; Register by calling 212 496-7400. Additional information on climate change and energy conservation can be found throughout the pages of this Newsletter.
